Lombardi Named Volunteer Of The Year

It was John Lombardi's complete dedication to making sure that visitors were scared out of their wits during first annual Virginia Scaregrounds at Paxton Manor-a feat that earned Arc of Loudoun, at $41,000, its largest fundraising haul in history-that led the president of All Recreation of Virginia to be named Volunteer Loudoun's Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for 2010. Lombardi was honored Monday evening at the county government center in Leesburg during Volunteer Loudoun's annual recognition event.

While Lombardi had been called away from the event, emcee Tony Howard, president of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, did not miss the opportunity to tell the packed boardroom exactly why Lombardi had been singled out for the honor. Howard told the story of the Arc of Loudoun's move to the historic Leesburg property, and how Lombardi was there in the beginning stages to install a playground and asked whether the organization had ever considered hosting a haunted house.

"Soon John was donating his time, energy and money toward creating The Virginia Scaregrounds at Paxton Manor," Howard said. "He purchased scary animatronics and props; secured event permits and fire marshal approval; designed a lighting plan and a parking plan; and recruited and trained volunteers. He made extensive site improvements for safety and removed brush to clear the way for a hayride. And he marketed the fundraiser relentlessly, designing and buying T-shirts and flyers and distributing them in grocery stores, high schools and malls."

After the event, Arc of Loudoun received all the proceeds Lombardi collected from tours of the haunted house, and since then the $41,000 has been used to fund programs at several different schools, a legal advocacy center and a new adult vocational training program at the Paxton campus.

Lombardi was not alone in his recognition during Monday night's ceremony. In total, nine other individuals and seven volunteer teams were recognized for their efforts throughout 2010. Taylor Jordan was named the Outstanding Youth Volunteer for her work with Loudoun Care's Claude Moore Community Builders programs, while the Claude Moore Park Summer Naturalist Interns-more than a dozen of them-were named the Outstanding Youth Volunteer Team.

Those individuals who gave their time to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program were named the Outstanding Volunteer Team for 2010, while the Medicare Part D Counseling Team was recognized as the Outstanding Older Adult Volunteer Team for its work helping the more than 200 elderly or disabled Medicare beneficiaries in Loudoun. A group from America Online was named the Outstanding Corporate Volunteer Team for its work delivering meals to residents of a Sterling apartment complex each Monday through Friday, representing Meals on Wheels. The Outstanding Adult Volunteer Team award went to the members of the county's Disability Services Board.
