A&M track sweeps Big 12 outdoors
It was a historic weekend for the Texas A&M track and field program as it swept the Big 12 Outdoor Championship team titles in Norman, Oklahoma. This marks the first time in school history the Aggies have won both team titles and the first time a team has swept the outdoor conference meet since 2006.
The double championship featured the A&M men setting a Big 12 record of 175 points and the Aggie women winning the fifth consecutive outdoor title in school history after totaling 146 points. This marks the first conference outdoor title for the Aggie men since 2001 and the ninth conference championship for the A&M women in the past five years. The Aggies won nine events on the final day of the Big 12 title meet, including an unprecedented sweep of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays.
Jeneba Tarmoh, junior sprinter, repeated as high point scorer for the Aggies after winning the 100- and 200-meters and helping the 4 x 100 relay team to a victory. Tarmoh ran the first leg for the relay team, which finished in a time of 42.90, just missing the meet record set in 2008 by A&M. Tarmoh won 100 in 11.25 and broke the stadium record in the 200 with a time of 22.46.
Other victories for the Aggies on the final day include Tyron Stewart in the triple jump, Demetrius Pinder in the 400 and Michael Preble in the 800. Stewart won the triple jump on his last attempt to join Pinder in leading 1-2-4 finishes in an event. Preble posted the second fastest time in school history with 1:47.71.
The second day of the championship saw Daphne Fitzpatrick earn silver in the women’s heptathlon for her school record performance. Fitzpatrick, a former soccer player for the Oklahoma Sooners, led the event after setting three personal bests on the first day of competition en route to a school record of 5,811 points and a silver medal.
“It was great competing here and to finish with a mark like that,” said Fitzpatrick. “That was my primary goal this weekend, breaking the school record, knowing I would have strong competition for the Big 12 title. Now I know I can score even more and have better chances at nationals.”
The Aggies finished the second day of the championships chasing both titles from third place. The Aggie men had 42.5 points, chasing Texas and Nebraska. The Aggie women had 31 points trailing Nebraska and Oklahoma. But both squads had many qualifiers for the finals, with the women advancing 13 athletes and the men advancing 15.

For the first time in school history, the Texas A&M track and field program swept the Big 12 Outdoor Championship team titles. It's the first time a school has achieved the sweep at the outdoor conference meet since Texas in 2006.
In the process of claiming the historic double championship, the Aggie men scored a Big 12 record of 175 points to better the 172 Nebraska had in 2004. It's the first conference outdoor title for Texas A&M men since 2001.
