Tri-County Tech agreement with USC Upstate eases student transfers

— Students leaving Tri-County Tech with a two-year degree will get automatic entrance to USC Upstate , a four-year college in Spartanburg, under a new agreement between the colleges announced Friday.

More than 100 transfer students from Tri-County Tech are already on the Spartanburg campus, and this agreement could dramatically boost those numbers, said USC Upstate’s associate vice chancellor for enrollment services, Donette Stewart.

Phil Buckheister, Tri-County Tech’s provost, said 2,000 students at Tech are currently enrolled in the college’s university transfer program.

“We want to be sure that each of them has the opportunity to make a successful transition to a four-year college or university,” he said in a statement from the school.

Buckheister told Tri-County Tech commissioners during a retreat last month about several “two-plus-two” agreements with area colleges. Veterinary tech students can transfer to Clemson for a four-year degree in animal science. Similarly, a two-year law enforcement degree transfers directly to Anderson University,

“We want our students to have the opportunity to go out and get work, but we don’t want their degrees from here to be terminal,” Buckheister said at the time.

USC Upstate has marketed its agreements with two-year colleges as the Upstate Direct Connect program. It has similar agreements already with Spartanburg Community College, Greenville Tech and Spartanburg Methodist College.

The agreement means a Tri-County Tech student’s credits will automatically be recognized toward a four-year diploma at USC Upstate; the student will also have access to USC Upstate academic advisers and gain free admission to athletic events in Spartanburg. The library and other facilities will also be available to the students, said Tammy Whaley, director of media relations for the Spartanburg school.

“They will be introduced to the campus environment,” Whaley said. “For many transfer students it’s hard to make that transition. This way they will have friendships formed before they get here.”

Tri-County Tech students will also be able to take the occasional USC Upstate class before enrolling there full time, she said.

Whaley said USC Upstate is still on the lookout for other Direct Connect partnerships among the Upstate’s two-year schools.

“It’s not only a good resource for transitions, but in today’s economy, it’s a wonderful opportunity knowing credits will seamlessly transfer so that you can complete a four-year degree in time,” Whaley said.
