Luke's school days were the happiest of my life
One of the most rewarding things about being a mother also happens to be the most heart-wrenching.
Allowing them to grow up, to flourish, to become independent and to fulfil their dreams is what motherhood is all about, but after it’s all been accomplished and they’re preparing to leave you once and for all, it hurts like nothing ever has.
Luke, my elder son, left school yesterday. He hung his blazer and tie up in the downstairs closet, dusting off the crazy foam and flour from the end of term frolics as he did so, and breathed a great big sigh of relief.
“Thank God for that. I hope I’ll never have to wear a blazer again in my life!” he said, before he strolled upstairs, threw on jeans and a T-shirt and re-emerged as a fully-fledged sixth form graduate.
And so, without any further ado, his school days have come to an end. Another rite of passage successfully negotiated. Now it’s all over bar the jubilant shouting when the A Level exams are over and he can plan the rest of his life.
For him, this is the beginning of a life-sized new adventure. And as much as I’m delighted we have made it this far through so many trials and tribulations, for me it’s still the end of an era.
It was bad enough when he didn’t want to hold my hand anymore crossing the road. Even that small declaration of independence, so insignificant that it went unnoticed by everyone else, had snapped off a heartstring, never to be repaired.
So you can imagine how this has felt. All week I’ve been wallowing in nostalgia, looking back over all those sweet and innocent rituals that have been, gone and passed — the school nativity plays where no-one wants to be the Angel Gabriel because it’s a girl’s name.
Making daffodil collages from egg cartons and finger-painted frog pictures with bubble-wrap frogspawn. The hand-crafted Christmas cards coated in glitter which flakes off like fairy dust all over the carpet. A thousand packed lunches and ironed shirts and scrawled signatures. All the treasure hunts and PTA quizzes and school trips to the zoo. The Buzz Lightyear birthday party invitations where all 26 kids are invited because you don’t want to leave anyone out.
The egg-and-spoon sports days and spelling tests and school reports and prize givings ... all ticked off life’s homework timetable and passed with flying colours.

The dressmaker Thelma (as she is constantly referred to in the voiceover) is often brought, as prototypes, pictures of Disney princess from Cinderella to Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, as perhaps befitting their age,
Like the scorpion in Aesop's fables who must sting the frog because that's simply what scorpions do, the world-renowned, self-promoting billionaire-clown must tout himself with passion and narcissistic self-regard. It was only a matter of time,

Ma Baby" (more recently popularized by the singing frog in the Warner Bros. cartoons) might be an appropriate score for this 1930 Jean Cocteau play in which an unnamed Woman feels trapped in a room with a telephone that is a lifeline to her physically

A large frog crouched at the foot of one of the ferns stares at me malignantly. None of the roots I find look even remotely large enough to peel and eat. Starvation food, indeed. After fruitless attacks on several hapless plants, I give up on the sword
