The number of individuals seeking treatment for prescription drug abuse is far higher than anyone could have imagined just 10 years ago. Over the last two decades, annual deaths due to prescription drug overdoses have increased five-fold. Often, people who take pain relievers are not told, or may not understand, that regular use of these drugs can lead to addiction. They also may not be aware of the need to strictly adhere to a physician’s instructions. The legitimacy attached to a pill prescribed by a trusted doctor conveys a sense of safety and can make the user less wary of the risks. The White House recently launched an effort to combat prescription drug abuse, aiming to reduce the abuse of prescription drugs by 15 percent over a five-year period. The effort is primarily aimed at curbing the abuse of opioid-based pain relievers such as oxycodone. The FDA has joined the effort with a campaign to educate patients and doctors on the proper use of pain medications.
