First round of storms packs punch for Rome, Berry College

Tens of thousands were still without power on Thursday.
On Wednesday, storm damage forced Berry College and Shorter College's Rome campus to close for the day and Floyd County Public Schools to release students early. Berry College delayed opening until 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
In addition to losing power Wednesday, the college lost a number of old oak trees, for which they're known. Some students were in class when the first round of storms and watched from nearby windows as winds snapped limbs. One of the trees damaged a guest cottage on campus; another tree completely destroyed a covered bike rack in a college's commons area.
One of the most iconic trees on campus, which was more than 100 years old, was uprooted. The tree, known as the "Graduation Tree" has historically provided shade for Berry College gradaution ceremonies. With graduation scheduled a week from Saturday, Berry students will be forced to adapt a new tradition.

Shorter College's Rome campus sustained similar damage and power outages.
Winds toppled large trees and fences, on the school's property. Several windows were blown out of the admissions office, which is a historic landmark on campus. And a group of trees crushed a small garage next to the office.
