Instead, the focus was on his flare gun, horn and bow and stern lights.U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary officer Bruce Parmett was sterner and less forgiving in going over the mayor's 20-foot Triton than your meanest local gadfly, but it was all for a good cause, Rodriguez said.
"Boating safety is just as critical and important" as safe driving, the mayor said, standing by the dock at Boynton Beach's Boat Club Park. "We live in a beautiful city with plenty of water access, and it's important that we boat safely."
Rodriguez was one of a handful of boaters who turned out Sunday for free inspections by the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 54.
The effort was rolled out Saturday ahead of National Safe Boating Week, which runs May 21 to May 27. The campaign, run by the Virginia-based National Safe Boating Council, targets people on board the more than 12.7 million boats operating in the U.S.
When it comes to unsafe boating practices, Florida is second to none. More boating accidents happened here in 2009, the most recent year for which data was available, than in any other state, according to a U.S. Coast Guard report published last summer.
The state totaled 610 accidents in 2009. California, at No. 2, totaled 478. Fifty-three of those Florida accidents were fatal, claiming 67 lives.
Parmett said he and the other officers were working to bring those numbers down.
"We're trying to get all these vessels in the shape they should be," Parmett said. "We try to educate the boater.
