De La Salle's Michael Barton commits to Cal football
Cal continued to deepen its footprint on the East Bay's 2012 football recruiting class, as De La Salle High linebacker Michael Barton gave an oral commitment on Friday to play for the Golden Bears.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound inside linebacker said he informed defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast and defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi, a De La Salle grad himself, of his decision on Friday morning. He also said linebackers coach Kenwick Thompson and assistant linebackers coach Tag McCurdy played a big part in his decision.
"I was always interested in Cal, and when they offered I started developing a really good relationship with Coach Thompson, Coach Pendergast and Coach Lupoi," said Barton, who has excellent speed and expects to play linebacker at Cal. "It's a big family circle because Coach (Mike) Blasquez is the strength and conditioning coach there, and he started at De La Salle."
Rated a four-star prospect by several recruiting services, Barton held offers from Arizona State, Colorado, LSU, Oregon State, SMU, UCLA, Washington and Washington State. He said Cal just stood out from the others.
Barton joins San Ramon Valley quarterback Zach Kline as a 2012 commit for the Bears.
He's also the second De La Salle player to commit this week, following quarterback Bart Houston's pledge to Wisconsin on Monday.
"It's great because now I can definitely focus on the team and my brothers," Barton said.

De La Salle has a very good Football Coach (I forgot his name), not to mention its a Private High School. The Spartans has a bunch of great alumnis like: Maurice Jones-Drew (Jacksonville Jaguars), Derek Landri (Notre Dame), Amani Toomer (Giants), DJ Williams (Broncos). My alma mater “Canyon High” beat De La Salle a couple years ago in the CIF Championship game.
I will tell you because I once played for a team that contended with them for the State’s consecutive conference win record… De La and a lot of other schools like Long Beach Poly and Mater and Bishop are allowed to recruit like colleges… These guys literally go out and find the talent FREAKS of high school football, fly them in, give them scholarships (these are all private schools) and use them to win big…
I went to a public school with a notorious, yet great minded coach who was not allowed the same recruiting ability.
De La ended up beating my school for the record a couple years after I left (my old school lost).
The answer is that they can recruit when few other HS do this.
